KTDC tourist centre at Thekkady offers two hour boating trips at the artificial lake formed near the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary. The rides are arranged by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC). One can see herds of elephants grazing near the edges of the shoreline. Sambar, Deer,  Gaur and wild boars can be seen flocking around the place at regular intervals. A majority of the wildlife activity in the area can be viewed during the summer months of March and April. Darters, egrets and kingfishers can be seen flocking around the withered trees that rise out of the lake. It is a surreal experience that is highly recommended if you are in the area.

Periyar National Park, also known as Periyar Tiger Reserve, is in the mountainous Western Ghats of Kerala, southern India. This wildlife sanctuary is home to tigers and a significant elephant population, as well as rare lion-tailed macaques, sambar deer, leopards and Indian bison. In the park’s north, Periyar Lake is popular for boat rides. Farther north, spice plantations surround the town of Kumily.

Day 1:

Arrival at Hotel – welcome drink – lunch – jeep safari to the mountains – return – dinner – overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 2:

Start on the jungle trek at 7:30 am from the boat landing, for about one and a half hours (approx 4 kms) – Packed breakfast from  Hotel – start on the bamboo raft (weather permitting) which takes you on a unique trip into the core areas of the jungle and also the non-tourism zones, to see a variety of wildlife including Elephants – Tiger – Leopard Bison (Gaur) – Sambar deer – Otters – Bear – Wild dogs – A rich variety of bird life can also be observed.

Lunch will be served in the jungle (prepared by forest staff) – Continue rafting and at about 3.30 pm the raft will drop you on the shore – Trek further Reach the Forest Bungalow for an overnight stay in the middle of the jungle. A guard will stay with you and also cook and serve dinner Leave for hotel at 7:00 am the next morning, after a refreshing hot cup of black tea/ coffee.

Day 3:

Breakfast at 9:30 am at the resort – As a grand finale, relax with an Ayurvedic massage (can also be done on the first day after the Jeep safari) – Check out.
